"How much does a Power BI dashboard cost?" is one of the first questions we hear. And it is a fair question — but the way it is usually asked leads to the wrong answer. Because the price of a dashboard tells you almost nothing without the other half of the math: what it gives back.
Before talking about investment ranges, it is worth flipping the question: how much does it cost you today to not have that dashboard?
The hidden cost of deciding in the dark
Hours every week exporting and pasting spreadsheets. Meetings spent double-checking numbers instead of deciding. Decisions delayed because no one trusts the data. Add that up over a year and the "expensive dashboard" is usually far cheaper than the problem it solves.
What actually defines the investment
A dashboard has no list price because "dashboard" can mean very different things. What moves the value:
- How many sources need to be integrated (one spreadsheet vs. five different systems).
- The state of the data at the source — clean data vs. data that needs a treatment layer first.
- The complexity of the business rules (a simple sum vs. margin, cohorts, targets).
- The need for governance, automatic refresh and team training.
So, is it expensive?
Without dodging the question: a one-off dashboard, on an already organized source, is a small and fast investment. A project that involves integrating several systems, treating the data at its base and training the team is bigger — because it delivers something different: a source of truth that supports decisions, not just a pretty chart.
Cheap gets expensive when the dashboard impresses in the meeting and no one opens it on Monday.
That is why, at Iowa, we do not sell "a dashboard". Our BI and data visualization service starts by understanding which decision it needs to support — and we size the investment from there.
