An MVP in 30 days: what you can build (and what you can't)

August 04, 20262 min readby Nelson Rodrigues

Promising an MVP in 30 days has become an agency cliché. The truth is more useful: some products fit that timeline comfortably, others don't fit at all — and knowing the difference before you hire saves months and tens of thousands.

"Your MVP in 30 days" is the most repeated promise in the development market. Sometimes it is true. Sometimes it is the start of a six-month project in disguise. This article separates one from the other, based on what we actually deliver in 3–6 week cycles.

What a 30-day MVP really is

An MVP is not the poor version of your product — it is the smallest version that tests the core business hypothesis. If the hypothesis is "companies would pay for a portal where the customer tracks their order", the MVP is the portal with login and the tracking screen. Not the mobile app, the loyalty program and the chatbot all at once.

What fits in 30 days (comfortably)

  • A portal with an authenticated area: registration, login and 2–4 core feature screens.
  • End-to-end automation of one process: form → approval → notification → record.
  • An integration between two systems that today talk via spreadsheet and email.
  • An internal application replacing the operation's "master spreadsheet".
  • An AI assistant over a knowledge base or company documents.

What does NOT fit (and beware of whoever promises it)

  • A two-sided marketplace (buyers and sellers) — that is two products, not one.
  • A native mobile app published in the stores — store review alone takes weeks.
  • A system with dozens of simultaneous integrations or years of legacy data migration.
  • Anything whose scope nobody can describe in one page.

A good MVP is not the one with the fewest features — it is the one that answers "is this worth it?" the fastest.

The method that makes the timeline real

A short timeline without process is just haste. At Iowa's Software Factory, the short cycle works because week zero is specification (scope locked before coding), development runs with automated tests and layered review, and every Friday you see a demo of what is working — not a status report. Cutting scope is your decision, informed; never an end-of-project surprise.

Where to start

If you have a product hypothesis or a process that needs to become a system, the first step is not budgeting — it is scoping. Our Express Discovery (R$ 1,900, fully credited if the project closes within 30 days) delivers exactly that: locked scope, a real timeline and a proposal within two weeks. Start here.
